BUXTON FESTIVAL HOLIDAY
16 July -3 nights
'If
you love opera as it should be seen and heard, I respectfully
suggest you hasten to Buxton
.' This quote from
Music Web is typical of the plaudits Buxton Festival has received,
and of the satisfaction expressed by both critics and the
general public for the 2007 season under the new artistic
director Andrew Greenwood. In 2008 the Festival will continue
with its tradition of presenting lesser known works in scintillating
productions.
The package includes
the Festival's three opera productions, Handel's Samson, Lortzing's
The Poacher and a British operatic triple billing of Holst's
Savitri and The Wandering Scholar with Vaughan Williams' Riders
to the Sea. There are three daily coach transfers to the Festival
to enable visitors to attend any combination of events during
the day and to relax and enjoy the wonderful facilities at
the
Moorside Grange Hotel and Spa. There will be a special group
evening meal on July 16 in Buxton before the opera. Transfers
from Macclesfield station are available on arrival and departure
(extra cost), and holiday extensions are possible. If preferred
clients may also use their own car for transfers to Buxton.
The Moorside Grange
Hotel is wonderfully situated in open Peak District countryside
only a short distance from Buxton. Leisure facilities include
a 18m
swimming pool, spa area with gym, squash and tennis courts
and 9 hole Pitch n' Putt course. The bedrooms are well-equipped
and comfortable. The Courtyard Restaurant offers elegant surroundings
for a relaxed evening meal, whilst the bar provides more informal,
lighter food options.
Wednesday July
16
We transfer late afternoon by coach to Buxton for a welcome
dinner and Festival greeting at the historic Old Hall Hotel.
This evening we see Handel's Samson. Transfers to the hotel
after the performance.
Thursday July
17
There will be a full programme of events at Buxton today,
including a morning talk by an eminent public or literary
figure and a daytime recital, concert or opera (at additional
cost). Transfers are available at appropriate times during
the day. This evening's included Festival production is the
Holst/Vaughan Williams triple bill.
Friday July 18
Today's
included performance is the rare comic opera by Lortzing The
Poacher. There will be further optional performances during
the day. Alternatively spend the afternoon at the beautiful
house and grounds of Lyme Park (scene of filming of the television
version of Pride and Prejudice).
The price of this
holiday is £340pp sharing a twin bedded room. This includes
three nights in the Moorside Grange Hotel on a bed and breakfast
basis, coach transfers, one evening meal, top price stalls
seats for three operas (circle seats on request, supplement
£9 per ticket) and the on-site services of a Grosvenor
Travel representative. Single room supplement £55. Additional
night on 15 July £38pp in a twin, or £55 in a
single. Additional services (eg train station transfers) available
on request. Deposit to be paid at time of booking £180pp.
Details of additional daytime events will be forwarded as
soon as known together with details of the Lyme Park excursion.
